There are two techniques generally used to fit the strips to the shape of the forms. They can be stapeled onto the forms (and later removed when the hull is completed) or you can build without staples and use various ingenious systems of clamping to ensure the strips follow the shape of the forms. I have chosen to build without staples. This page describes my routine each time I go into the garage and add a strip to the canoe.

  • Trim the previously glued strip to length using a Japanese saw

  • Remove any hardened glue from the prior strip at the end to ensure next strip will fit flush

  • Remove all the clamps holding the prior strip in place against the forms

  • Open all the clamps so that they are ready to use and place the screw/push clamps and the wooden help pieces one by each station ready to use

  • Check all my boxes of help pieces (clamps, elastics ) are ready and always in the same place

  • Check all other attributes and tools are ready in the same place - glue, staple machine, parcel tape, scissors, chisels, saw, etc

  • Check that the next strip will lie flat against the stem. If necessary remove some wood from the stem until the strip will lie flat using a chisel

  • At same time, roughly chisel a little piece of the stem still proud so that the next few strips will also nearly lie flat

  • Select a strip of desired colour, note down which numbered strip I have chosen, and lay across the top of the forms

  • Vacuum around the ends to remove all sawdust and wood bits and vacuum along the prior strip to ensure that the cove is completely free of sawdust pieces

  • Fill a bucket of water – ready for cleaning off excess glue

  • Fill the cove of prior strip with glue

  • Fix the strip.  I use water based wood glue, type express. Because of the relatively low temperature there is plenty of time to fix the strip in place and clamp it. I start fixing it in the middle and move to the ends in turn. Lidl push clamps work the best as I can operate them with one hand while holding the strip and help pieces with the other hand.

  • Glue the ends using construction glue

  • Check all clamps tight and pushing strip against the forms without any odd bulges or contortions

  • Wash off all excess glue

  • Go indoors and enjoy a cup of tea
